Welcome to

Douglas

A vibrant city renowned for its lakeside cottages, historic shops, and art galleries.

Welcome to Douglas

Recognized for its vibrant culture and its quaint downtown area, the city of Douglas, Michigan, is a popular summer vacation destination. It is located on the smaller Kalamazoo Lake as well as the shores of Lake Michigan, surrounded by large forests and farmland, just south of the city of Saugatuck. With ample opportunities for swimming and other forms of outdoor recreation, Douglas is renowned for its lakeside cottages, as well as the historic shops, restaurants, and art galleries along Center Street.

A popular cottage destination, the city of Douglas, Michigan is found right on the lakefront. It is part of Allegan County and has a population of around 1,300 people. It is home to about a mile of Lake Michigan beach, but provides ample boating opportunities, as it sits on Kalamazoo Lake and Kalamazoo River. Directly to the north of Douglas is Saugatuck, while the larger city (and tourist destination) of Holland is about 12 miles north. Douglas is surrounded by thick forest, farmland, and area lakes, making this city an excellent retreat for nature-lovers.

The Douglas real estate market comprises both older, historic properties and new construction homes, although listings are quite exclusive and limited. Some of the most sought-after properties are located right on the lakefront, with either beach views or, in some cases, private water access. As Douglas is considered a cottage community, these properties make for excellent second homes or vacation properties. New developments, such as The Boardwalk at Swing Bridge ( condo community just steps from the waterfront), offer modern interiors, open-concept floor plans, and contemporary finishes.

Older properties, of course, have that desirable charm, but are typically smaller in square footage and may not have the same upgrades. With the motto, "Village Vibe, City Cool", Douglas is home to a charming downtown area, complete with historic storefronts and notable landmarks. This includes the Saugatuck-Douglas District Library, the city hall building, Water Street Gallery, and the Saugatuck Douglas History Center—all of which are located on Center Street. As a smaller community, residents of Douglas are only a short drive away from all the necessities.
